Click on your favorite search engine and enter the word “leadership”. You will be engulfed in a tidal wave of ideas, articles and books. Many authors put the microscope on personal characters of great leaders. Churchill, for example, was inspiring, persistent, knowledgeable, driven, and confident. Einstein was visionary, brilliant, and an exceptional problem solver. Other notable leaders are praised for their ethic, emotional intelligence, time manager skills, and strategic thinking. Who wouldn’t want their leaders to possess all these characteristics?
Yet, you would search in vain for a serious discussion on the consequence of genuine leadership: progress. Winston Churchill, for instance, was a great political leader because he advanced the cause of freedom. Likewise, Albert Einstein was a great scientific leader because he moved scientific thought forward. Indeed, the literature rarely discusses how leaders actually made progress. How do genuine leaders define progress? What are the underlying features of progress making? How do leaders make progress? These are the questions we will explore.
